Использование лазеров с непрерывными мощностями от 0,5 до 10 кВт для модифицирования структуры поверхности и улучшения ее свойств без неблагоприятного воздействия на объемные свойства. Поверхностное изменение может иметь три формы. Первая — упрочнение за счет превращений, при котором поверхность нагревается так, чтобы происходили термическая диффузия и превращения в твердом состоянии. Вторая — поверхностное оплавление, которое приводит к изменению структуры благодаря высокоскоростной закалке от температур плавления. Третья форма — поверхностное лазерное легирование, при котором легирующие элементы добавляются в оплавленную зону для изменения состава поверхности. Оригинальные структуры, созданные с помощью лазерного оплавления и лазерного легирования могут проявлять улучшенные электрохимические и трибологические свойства.
